Occasional Announcement
If you get this error in PetWhere it probably means you are 1) Running Windows 98, not XP, and 2) have installed IE6 for some strange reason -- we did because for an even stranger reason our version of Quickbooks requires it.

According to PetWhere support, and our experience, the error can be ignored.  Just close the offending window and log into Petwhere, as we will continue to do.  Earlier the support page was at the ASPCA site, later at Petfinders, who knows where it is now..

A copy of the information as it was when it was still posted at Petfinders follows.

Y2KFOXW.EXE Errors:
Some PetWhere 2.6 users are encountering a new set of error messages referring to "Y2KL". Typically, the error messages look something like:
Y2KL: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
Details: Y2KL caused a general protection fault in module PETWHERE.EXE.
By clicking "Close" on the error message, PetWhere will continue to load and appears to operate without further problems.

The PetWhere Support Team has investigated this issue and determined that the problem appears to be a conflict between PetWhere 2.6 and Internet Explorer 6.0 running on some versions of Windows. Windows 2000 does NOT appear to be affected by this problem.

PetWhere uses a third-party program called y2kfoxw.exe to insure that dates entered into PetWhere are y2k-compliant. The y2kl program that is "crashing" is part of the y2kfoxw.exe program. However, research done by the PetWhere Team indicates that dates entered into the PetWhere are y2k-compliant, even if the y2kl error message occurs.

Unfortunately, there is little the PetWhere Team can do to prevent the y2kl error message from occurring. The y2kfoxw.exe program cannot be modified by us and is no longer being updated by the company who produced it.

PetWhere users have two options if they are receiving the y2kl error message:

  • Ignore it by closing the error message when it occurs.
  • Revert to a previous version of Internet Explorer. You can do this by clicking on your Windows Start button and going to Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs. Double-click on Internet Explorer 6.0 and select "Restore the previous Windows configuration".
We realize this may not be the best option due to the security enhancements and other changes included in Internet Explorer 6.0.

We apologize for the inconvenience these unforeseen problems have caused our users. If you have any questions on this matter or need further assistance, please contact PetWhere Technical Support at (800) 738-9437.
